Hi - I have 2 separate projects with the same data.

430 participants imported as Excel data, with columnns assigned coding and classiftying data.  The classifiying data has been linked to a classification 'Participants'. A separate classification 'Attitudes' was created and I lost the participant attribute values for participants in both projects, I think when I switched classification sheets over to 'Attitudes'. This happent for all 430 in one project but only 50 in the second project.

My questions:

1. Can I get the attribute values back without importing from a classification sheet?  I know how to create a classification sheet from the classifying data and update existing values. But is this the only way?

2.  Is there any way to merge two projects with the same data in such a way that you maintain both sets of coding and don't lose attribute values?

thank you

Hello Veronica,

Thanks for your post.

1. You can use the Classify Nodes from Dataset Wizard in NVivo, to assign attribute values to your nodes from the dataset that you have in your project. Please refer to the below NVivo help link for more information:

http://help-nv10.qsr...aset_wizard.htm

2. You can merge your projects by following the instructions at: http://help-nv10.qsr...iniTOCBookMark3

If the nodes in both project files have different attribute values, NVivo will keep the attribute values from the project being imported. See the below link for more information:

http://help-nv10.qsr...ring_import.htm

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Rahul Gupta

Thanks for your reply.

I managed to restore the attribute values.

Another two questions:

1. When we merge projects should the project names and data sources within them have the same names?

Mine were different, the data was the same, one  source was missing one participant.

I now have one project with two source files. I have autocoded the participant numbers of both source files to the same case nodes with one classification sheet.

I now find the coded thematic nodes for the imported project are not available at my case nodes. I may have missed a step.

i.e. I can open the thematic nodes from the imported project and see content.

If I open the case nodes individually I can only see coding from the project that was imported into.

2. Can I complete merging of the coded material in this situation?

thanks and regards,

Veronica

Hi Veronica,

When you merge two projects, the names do not have to be the same, however the sources inside them must be identical. This means they must have the same name and exactly the same content. Even if they change by one character, NVivo will not merge the two sources, and you will end up with a duplicate source. The following has more information on this: http://help-nv10.qsr...ring_import.htm

When you imported the coded source and the thematic node, please also ensure you imported the coding as well, otherwise any coding from the previous file will not be imported. Please let me know if I have misunderstood your query.

Cheers,

Tane

Thank you - you have answered my question.  I fear i may have (stupidly) deleted one of the participants from my sourcefile on one of the projects, and the source names were different.

I'll check the source files and see if I can make them identicle.  I did import the coding so that isn't the problem.

Thanks again.
