  2. Export codes per paragraph

Hello Alex, Unfortunately there is no way to automate NVivo for Mac to do this. You may manually code each paragraph to nodes and name them as paragraph 1...2 and so on and run the Matrix coding query by adding the sources as rows and the coded nodes as columns. Please note that if you have access to NVivo Plus for Windows you can use the Auto code based on source structure feature which would help automate the coding for paragraphs. Please refer to http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/concepts/about_automatic_coding_techniques.htm#MiniTOCBookMark3 for more information. Kind regards, Sameer
  3. Three dimension (variables) Matrix Query

Hi Juan, You should be able to select the third variable(secondary education node) by setting the scope of the query(by clicking Select in front of In, when running the query). Refer to instructions under 'running matrix query outside wizard' section in the link below: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/run_a_matrix_coding_query.htm I hope this helps. Kind Regards, Bhupesh
  4. Hi, This information is available in node List View where in front of node name, you can see the number of sources coded and number of coding references across all sources. You can also export your node list to Excel or Word. Refer to the links below: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/concepts/introducing_the_workspace.htm http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/export_nodes.htm#MiniTOCBookMark6 I hope this helps. Kind Regards, Bhupesh
  5. Hi Sue, When a Facebook dataset is imported into NVivo, it identifies various fields as Codable or Classifying. Codable fields have a white background and items in this field can only be coded. Refer to the link below: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/basic_coding_in_dataset_sources.htm Let me know if you are referring to coding images. Kind Regards, Bhupesh
  6. Coding highlight remains after uncoding

Hi Nicholas, This is indeed very odd. Could you please submit a support request via the link below & attach your project file for investigation? http://www.qsrinternational.com/customer-support Kind Regards, Bhupesh
  7. Hi Yaz, You can create new nodes representing broader categories. Then move your existing nodes as child nodes of broader parent nodes. Refer to the link below: http://help-nv11mac.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/reorder_and_refine_nodes.htm#MiniTOCBookMark5 You can aggregate all the coding references from the child nodes at the parent node by turning Aggregation on. Refer to the link below: http://help-nv11mac.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/aggregate_nodes.htm I hope this helps. Kind Regards, Bhupesh
  8. Hi Robin, It is unusual that project file has suddenly disappeared. Was it accidentally deleted? If not, were you accessing it from a network drive or an online storage such as Dropbox? I have attached a corrupt dummy project to help you recover the project from the nvb file. Download and save this file to your computer and then attempt to open it in NVivo. You will be presented with an option to recover from a project recovery file. Select your nvb file to recover the project. Kind Regards, Bhupesh NV10CorruptProject(for restoring project backups).nvp
  9. Hi gauthi24, Currently, NVIvo for Mac does not support running a Matrix Coding query between coded timeline section nodes and the text from transcript nodes to look for common coding or overlaps. I'll pass this request to our product team for consideration in future versions of NVivo. Regards, Rahul Gupta
  10. Cluster Analysis by Case?

Hi Lisa, It won't be possible to run a cluster analysis to find coding similarity in sources based on attributes. You can create different sets for different schools and add your sources to these sets. Then you can run a cluster analysis on those sets. Refer to the link below for detailed information on sets: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/create_and_manage_sets.htm Another method is to use the following approach: - Create cases for schools, coding all of the documents for a given school to the case node - Create a Case vs Node matrix - Change the cell content to Nodes and select your cases (school) - Turn on Cell Shading I hope this helps. Kind Regards, Bhupesh Bhardwaj
  11. Hi Michael, NVivo doesn't have any auto-save feature as such. However, NVivo prompts you to save your project every 15 minutes. If project progress is not saved regularly and NVivo crashes, data after the last save, would most likely be lost. May I know if you are accessing your project from a network drive or an online storage such as Dropbox? Our technical team works regularly about improving NVivo's stability so as to minimise crashes however, I agree that there is scope for improvement. I have passed on your feedback to our product team about improving application stability. To fix crashes, in addition to enabling 'display plain text', I would also recommend you to rename your NVivo 11 customization folder as per steps below. Note, taking this action will reset any customization you have set up and your 'My Recent Projects' list on the Welcome screen will be refreshed. If you use NVivo 9 & 10 on the same PC these steps will also reset any customization you have setup in that program. Next time you open NVivo 11, navigate to where your project is located and double-click on the project icon to open it. This action will place the project name back in the 'My Recent Projects' list. As I am unsure which operating system you are using I have provided instructions for Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows Vista/7. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Windows 10: 1. With NVivo 11 closed, follow the steps below: i. In the search box on the task bar (bottom left), start typing ‘Folder Options’ and click on File Explorer Options in the search results ii. In the new file explorer window that opens up, click on the View tab. iii In the Advanced settings section, under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files, folders and drives option and click OK 2. Navigate to the following folders: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\QSR_International C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\QSR_International (If exists) 3. Within these folders, rename all folders where the name starts with NVivo.exe_Url (e.g rename to old NVivo.exe_Url). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Windows 8: 1. With NVivo 11 closed, follow the steps below: i. From the Start screen, start typing Explorer and click on File Explorer icon in search results displayed ii. A new file explorer window should open up. Click on the View tab and check the Hidden Items option 2. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Windows 7: 1. With NVivo 11 closed, open Windows Explorer a) Right-click on the Windows Start circle -> Explore. 2. Display all hidden files and folders: a) Click on Organize -> Folder and Search Options On the 'Folder Options' dialog, click on the View tab and check 'Show hidden files and folders' option c) Click on the Apply button and click OK. 3. Navigate to the following folders: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\QSR_International C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\QSR_International (If exists) 4. Within these folders, rename all folders where the name starts with NVivo.exe_Url (e.g rename to old NVivo.exe_Url). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let me know how you go. Kind Regards, Bhupesh
  12. Hi Sue, At this stage, NCapture does not allow you to specify a date range for the collection of data from Social Media. The number of posts captured are dependent on Facebook’s API (Application Program Interface): http://help-ncapture.qsrinternational.com/desktop/topics/capture_from_facebook.htm#MiniTOCBookMark5 Also, currently, there is no way to remove the unwanted entries as datasets cannot be edited into NVivo. As a workaround for now, you can export your social media dataset out of NVivo as an Excel file (right click on File and select ‘Export’), remove the unwanted entries from the file and then re import the edited Excel file as per the below help link: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/import_data_from_spreadsheets_and_text_files.htm Please note that the imported dataset will not be the same as the social media dataset that was originally imported. I’ll pass your suggestions to our product team for consideration in future versions of NVivo. Regards, Rahul Gupta
  13. case study

Hello Emilie, I believe you want to code your second transcript (T2) to the case that you have created from the first transcript (T1). You may do this by right clicking on T2 and selecting Code Sources > At Existing Nodes or Cases.... In the window that opens, click on the Cases folder in the left hand side, select the case that you have created from T1 on the right and click Select. Please refer to the below NVivo help link for more information: http://help-nv11mac.qsrinternational.com/desktop/concepts/about_coding.htm#MiniTOCBookMark7 I hope this helps. Regards, Rahul Gupta
  14. See only nodes from particular sources

Hi Maren, You may try running a Group query in NVivo 11 and set it's scope to your preferred source file. Please refer to the below NVivo help link for more information: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/run_a_group_query.htm If that doesn't help, you may generate a report in NVivo 11 by referring to the below NVivo help link: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/create_reports_using_the_report_wizard.htm I hope this helps. Regards, Rahul Gupta
  15. How many files?

Hello Charlotte, I noticed that you posted this in another forum post as well: http://forums.qsrinternational.com/index.php?/topic/6338-insert-files/ which has been replied to by us. Regards, Rahul
  16. Insert files

Hi Charlotte, There is no limit on the number of files that can be imported in NVivo 11 provided your project file size does not exceed 10 GB, which is the maximum size of an NVivo 11 for Windows standalone project. Can you please fill out a support form at: http://www.qsrinternational.com/customer-support providing us more information about the error that you are getting? Once your support request is received, we’ll be able to assist you further. Regards, Rahul Gupta
  17. Hi Becky, Copying the file and deleting the coding you don’t wish to see would be one approach. An easy way to remove the coding you’re not interested in would be to filter your dataset so that it shows all of the rows you are NOT interested in. You can then select all of these rows (Keyboard shortcut Command + A will make this easier) and uncode all of the references at the same time. Another approach to finding the references you’re after could be to run a coding query using the same criteria you used to filter your dataset. This assumes that the columns you used to filter your dataset are created as case attribute values. Regards, Heather
  18. Capturing "sub-threads" on Facebook

Hi Oded, This is a bug with NCapture where NCapture will refresh the page during the capture process. As the page is refreshed any comment threads that were expanded will be collapsed and won’t be captured. Our development team is aware of this problem and hope to resolve it in future. For now, as a workaround, you could try printing the webpage to a PDF and then import this PDF into NVivo. Please follow the instructions below to do this. Chrome: Press Control + P to open the print dialog (Command + P on Mac) Click “Change…” button Select “Save as PDF” Click “Print” Internet Explorer: Press Control + P to open the print dialog Select “Microsoft Print to PDF” as the printer Click “Print” Regards, Heather
  19. Show other nodes coding at a different node

Hi Pingzee, Can you please get in contact via our support request form at http://www.qsrinternational.com/nvivo-support/contact-support We’d like a few more details such as your codebook and denominations so we can offer suggestions. Regards, Heather
  20. Hi Ini, I can see you have submitted a support request form and I have sent you an email. If your current NVivo project was created by merging together two separate NVivo projects, it could be contributing to this problem if the two projects did not merge as you have expected. NVivo uses certain criteria to determine if project items are duplicates and if these are not met, the duplicate items are imported again rather than being merged with the existing items. If this happened with any of the cases, sources or nodes you’re using for your query criteria your results might not be quite what you’re expecting because you’ll have one set of project items that contains the coding from Project A and one set of project items that contains the coding from project B. You also might run into problems if the cases in both projects are considered duplicates, but they had been classified differently in each project. If that’s the case, the classification from Project B is still imported into project A but the cases retain the classification from project A. As the classification from project B is imported into the project you can still use it when choosing query criteria, but none of your cases will be assigned to this classification so you’ll receive no query result. You can find more detail on how NVivo detaects and merges duplicate project items at the following link http://help-nv10.qsrinternational.com/desktop/deep_concepts/how_duplicate_project_items_are_handled_during_import.htm? Regards, Heather
  21. Hi Candace, Matrix coding queries look for common coding (intersection) between the row and the column items specified in the query. If you’re receiving zero results, it is very likely there is nothing coded that is common between the row and the column item in the query. If you believe that there should be intersecting coding, I’d suggest that you double check your query criteria. Check that you’re searching in the correct source/s and that your search criteria are correct. It can also be a good idea to have a look at your source with coding stripes on to verify that your coding is as expected. If you’re still having difficulty running this query, please fill out a support request form at the following link and we’ll be happy to help further. http://www.qsrinternational.com/nvivo-support/contact-support Regards, Heather
  22. Customized colors

Hi Peggy, NVivo provides 7 colours that you can assign to your nodes. At this stage, you can’t specify a custom colour using RGB codes. I have passed a request for this feature on to the relevant team. Our aim is to support your work by continually adding new functionality and features in future releases of NVivo and feedback and suggestions help us to shape the future of the software. Regards, Heather
  23. Word counts in NVivo

Hi, In order to get the total number of words spoken by the participant only, you would first need to code the transcript so that all of the participant speech is in their own node or set of nodes. This will then allow you to do a word count of the node, or a word count of the references that intersect those nodes and the source if your nodes contain other irrelevant coding as well. The easiest way to find the total number of words coded is to create a report. You can find information about reports here: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/create_reports_using_the_report_wizard.htm I have also attached a .nvr file which is a report I have made in the past which I think will suit your needs. You can load it by first downloading the file, and then opening NVivo and clicking Reports from the Navigation pane. Right-click somewhere in the list view and select Import Report. Navigate to where you saved the .nvr file and import. There is a total word count for each selected node, and a total at the bottom. Cheers, Tane Words per Node.nvr
  24. Hi Becky, You’re not able to edit your dataset within NVivo to delete rows, but you can filter your data set to only show the rows that you’re interested in. You can also hide columns if you don’t wish to see all your columns. You can find instructions on how to do this at the following link http://help-nv11mac.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/filter_sort_and_customize_datasets.htm Regards, Heather
  25. Importing transcripts To NVIVO for Mac

Hi, How were the documents edited and commented previously? If they were edited in word, and the comments are in-line, or actually written in the document on the page, then they should import as expected. However, if the comments are Microsoft Word comments (where they display off the page) then these wont come in when importing. You can copy and paste the commented text onto the page but this would be a manual process. There may be a tool or program that allows you to save your word document (with comments and edits) as a new document or PDF file, which you could then import into NVivo. However, there is nothing that I can recommend to do this, so it may require some investigating on your part. Also, just in case you are wanting to import these transcripts so that they line-up with an already imported audio / video file, please ensure they are formatted correctly: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/import_audio_or_video_transcripts.htm If you are just importing the transcript as it's own source you don't need to worry about doing this. Cheers, Tane
