  1. Hello, I'm trying to use the Explore Source Categorisation Sheet function on my Mac but run into problems every time. When I want to change an attribute in multiple sources, for example, it jumps around after each new entry. So I can't simply go down a column making a change, for example. I have to relocate the correct entry point each time. Often the filter icon at the top of columns disappears and I have to close down and reopen the project in order to get them back. Anybody else having these annoying problems? Anybody worked a way to resolve them? Many thanks
  2. Hi, I have created cases and assigned case classifications, attributes, which have values. I can see how I can look at, and edit and export, a case classification sheet and see which values my cases are assigned at each attribute. What I would like to be able to do is see/export a list of all the attributes I have created and their possible values so that I can review the attributes (and descriptions) and values (and descriptions). Is this possible? Thanks
  3. I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with a database set-up issue in Nvivo. I've been looking around for answers but as yet had no luck. I'm working on a project that analyses a collection of c. 400 conversation transcripts relating to 50 participants. I have imported the conversations as sources and created a source classification for them - importing a classification sheet with attributes including the participants' active within each conversation (in three separate columns to allow for multiple participants). I have also created a case node for each participant and a classification based on another imported sheet. My issue is that I cannot find away to efficiently group/link/connect the sources to relevant participant. I notice in the user guide that one of the functions of case nodes is to "group multiple sources that relate to the same entity — for example, code an interview transcript, survey responses and follow-up correspondence to the same person", however, I can't find any further information on this within the guide. If anyone has any advice on how I might do this, preferably without manually coding each source to its relevant case nodes, I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance, Adam
  4. Hi, I have set up a classification sheet with attributes for my survey data. However, to make classifications viable, I need to link the source data to the case nodes or respondents. The only way i know to do this is manually, like illustrated here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2_Fkienpac Is there a way to complete this process automatically? I have so many records and would really like to do this more efficiently. Corine
  5. Hi all, I’m a beginner with NVivo, and over the past couple of weeks I’ve been working at coding a large amount of survey data. The dataset is large, as I’m working with 7,200 respondents, but I’ve divided responses according to question to make things a little simpler. I’ve been having experiencing some problems related to classification sheets and case nodes, and how they interact with the data. I’ve also been having a lot of trouble trying to run matrix coding and group coding queries according to population attributes. Here’s what I’ve done so far: I’ve imported a dataset containing responses to one of the questions, respondent IDs, as well as demographic information (within a single dataset). After that was done, I coded the responses. I noticed that NVivo automatically creates case nodes, classifications, and attributes based on the information you upload. I thought that since NVivo had already done this, I would be in the clear. I should also say that I’ve checked to make sure that cases are tied to attributes by opening the “case properties” info, and they look like they’re connected. Here’s the problem: I’ve tried to use matrix and group queries according to demographic attribute (e.g. how many people from “X” geographic area are represented in the “Baseball” node, for instance), but the queries always come up empty when I try to input anything specific to case nodes or attributes. I checked, and none of the case nodes contain references, so that’s probably why. At this point, I’m not sure if I’ve done something wrong in terms of coding, or in arranging case nodes/attributes. Just to be sure I started a new project, autocoded the answers, and manually uploaded case nodes from excel sheets, as well as classification sheets, and I had a similar problem. I assumed that when you code, NVivo would automatically tie your codes with the case node/attribute that are connected to them. Could anyone tell me where I could have gone wrong? I’d also really appreciate more information about case nodes/attributes/classification sheets and how to upload them so that all information is tied together properly. Thanks, RandomUser
  6. Hello everyone, I am a quite new NVivo 11 Pro user. I am watching tutorials to learn more about it, however, I am having a hard time to understand classification, attributes, and matrix coding in NVivo 11 for windows. I would like to use the software for my dissertation research. In my research, I am doing university mission statement analysis. Within this context, I would like to pull out data based on degree programs, degree types, and university types. For example, I would like to compare public versus private university mission statements. Likewise, I would like to pull out the data for the same degree types and etc. I already imported my excel sheet to NVivo. I also coded the programs as public versus private, according to degree type (bachelor, master, etc). My question is how can I compare only public university and private university programs within each other and with each other. I think I should do some kind of matrix coding but I would appreciate if anyone can direct me about this issue. Kind regards,
  7. Hi, I have a number of interview transcripts from interviewees who often hold more than one steady job each. Using Classficiation & Attributes only seems to allow me to put the interviewee (or source) into one or other classfication or give them one job under a 'Job' attriubute. Am I doing something wrong? What is the best way to label sources like this? Apologies for the basic question - new to NVivo! Chris Using NVivo 10
  8. NVivo issue.docxHi, I work at a health education center doing public health research and I am using NVivo to manage the transcripts from participant interviews. I just started using the program last week. I had no issues importing anything, but my boss wants the information graphed/charted. I am having difficulty doing so. I cannot add in attributes (which is the notification I keep getting. It says I need to add in attributes before I can graph my nodes). The attribute tab (along with many others) is grayed out at the top. We purchased the full version of the software, so I cannot seem to figure out why I do not have access to basically half of my tools. I have read manuals and watched quite a few instructional videos and none of them seem to answer why I don't have access. If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. I will include a screenshot. Thanks!
  9. Hi, I have imported an excel data base which includes quantitative and qualitative data from over 200 respondents (which each row in the excel file indicating one respondent). I imported the data using the wizard and assigned quantitative fields as classifying fields and qualitative as codable text etc I then created a node for each respondent and assigned attribute values (as node classifications) Everything in my classification table looks fine but everytime I run a matrix coding query (or any other query for that matter) and try to use the classification nodes as parameters for the query it tells me that my search is empty ( when there is certainly data) Furthermore I would really like to be able to use classifaction nodes to find out how specific groups were coded. Specifically we asked four questions which had open ended responses, these were all coded (from the same source) and now I would like to know which nodes were coded for each question so I can compare them at that very broad level. I would like to do the same with gender (another classifying code) and see how each gender was coded. I know I can explore how each gender responded for specific nodes (in a matrix query) but I want more basic information than that for an initial analysis. I had seen some guides about doing this but required my classificatino nodes to be working, which they are not. any suggestions? thanks Amy
  10. I am coding documents where each document is a case, and where there are many different activities that happened at specific times that need to be coded. Each activity is coded to the relevant node (there are usually multiple activities for each node for each case) and I would like to code the year that the activity occurred (there are usually multiple actives per year for each case). I have considered using attributes to do this. So year =(2000, 2001, ... 2015) as an attribute for EACH activity node. However I am concerned that this will not work because attributes seem to apply to all the data in a case. Are my concerns valid, and if so is there a way that I can achieve this objective? (I have a very large number of cases to code!) Many thanks for any help.
  11. I have created a model to illustrate connections between sources and some nodes. Next I wanted to add in attributes for the sources (gender, area of interest) as a way of visually diving deeper into the data. But while I can select "classifications" or "attributes" option from the Associated Data window, when I click on "Select," while I can see the classifications, they are greyed out and not available. Is the problem that Models just is not the right visualization tool? Or that Models is not set up to show different "layers" of information? Or am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance for the help.
  12. I’ve got an issue in NVivo around classification sheets for sources vs. nodes for a systematic review. It’s papers basically that are imported as sources (rather than interviews but in effect they can be treated the same) that have then been coded via nodes that I’ve developed. I’ve got a source classification sheet with attributes that highlight key differences in the papers such as location. What I want to do is explore the coding based on the attributes of the papers e.g. china vs. UK. I can do this via a matrix query but it’s not working in the way that I want. I don’t have node classifications as the papers are sources rather than nodes – so I can’t explore via node attributes, if that makes sense? I played with the idea of creating case nodes, but it doesn’t feel right. Any suggestions as to what I could do to compare the coding in the papers without having to create case nodes?
  13. I'm presently making a research about teachers' pedagogy based on evaluation criteria. I'd like to cross-reference teachers' behavior with queries such as : "Teacher takes prerequisites into consideration into his/her lesson plan" : never / rarely / at time / often / frequently To obtain this kind of answer, I browse though various types of documents, among which spreadsheets, but also notes, that I have already coded with some different topics. The problem is that I don't really see where the evaluation scale should be embedded: in the nodes ? as nodes attributes ? as values of attributes ? I tried to make them values of attribute but, in this case, they apply to a node without consideration for the type of source I have coded. I actually would like to be able to label a source sample with both the query AND the different evaluation scales. Then I would be able to have a chart reflecting teachers' behavior based on, for example, frequency.

Hi there, I am trying to import a classification sheet, which is an excel document containing all of the demographic information relating to a sample of interviewees, e.g. name, gender, location, age etc. Every time I try to import the document, the attributes for each individual appear as 'unassigned'.. i.e. let's say for 'Laura', her gender, location and age all appear as unassigned within Nvivo, even though all of these things are filled in with text in the excel sheet. I am importing the sheet as: Step 2: Classification type - node classification Step 3: Specifying nodes are represented as names and located within a specific node (they are all students, so appear under the 'student' node) Step 4: Keeping the default settings for date and time format I've attached one of the sheets I've been trying to import to Nvivo as an example. Any help would be appreciated as I have classification data on around 100 people and don't want to have to manually assign attributes. Thank you LDOs.xlsx
  15. What is the maximum number of attributes that can be added. Specifically, I am trying to figure out what data from a survey I want to assign as an attribute for a "person node" and which data I want to code for.
  16. Hi, I'm working with a large dataset in NVivo10. This is probably a stupid question but rather than foul up the data I thought I would ask... I think I understand how to add attributes to nodes. However my dataset is divided in to 250 interviews, each one a numbered source document in Internals. At the moment generic information about the informant - Age, Gender, Location - is assigned a node. So the "30-50 age" range Node may be linked to sources 124, 155, 147, etc for example. When I run a cluster analysis the informant's biographical data is taken in to account. I was therefore thinking of creating classification sheets for each informant, where Age, Gender & Location is an Attribute of the Source. I know attributes are more commonly used for storing bibligraphical data, but I *think* this would work well for my purposes. Is there any reason not to set up attributes like this for Sources, and can anyone point me to a tutorial on how to do it? For data that is given for every source an attribute seems more appropraiet than a Node, especially as I don't want it to form part of the initial analysis of the coding? Thanks cj x
  17. Is there a way to change the order in which the results appear in Nodes? At present they seem to appear in the order in which they were entered in the program - but I would like them to appear in chronological order (according to the Date attribute in their classification). Thanks
  18. I am working on a project that analyzes university program websites. My Internal Source folder structure is Internals/Websites/University. Each university's folder contains multiple webpages (home page, faq, courses, etc). Some of the universities offer multiple degrees that are part of my study. I originally coded the webpages with multiple nodes (nodes for degree requirements, college located in, department, type of masters, etc), but when trying to work with models and relationships, I couldn't filter the programs as I needed. It was recommended to me that I create classifications instead. I have an excel spreadsheet with my sources and the various attributes that I want to assign to each program. My spreadsheet has the first column as Institution, then each following column is an attribute (Type of Institution, College, Department, Type of Masters, Field Experience, Credit Requirement...). My problem is that some of the institutions offer multiple degrees, so under type of Masters there's actually 2 answers. Can I list the institution in Column 1 twice? How would that connect to my sources when I tried to import the spreadsheet? Is there a better way that I can do this? Thanks
  19. Dear community, thanks for you help in advance. I have a problem I cant solve - I want to run a query that uses a single node, and looks only in the selected sources that have a particular attribute. For example I want to answer: What is the 'role of evidence in policymaking' (node) according to 'policymakers' (classification attribute on source). (Of course I have many other queries of this nature to run). So I went through these steps (see screenshot attached) 1) Set up a source classification with various attributes (one of them being 'interviewee category' ) 2) Set the 'attribute properties' of internal source documents (eg: policymakers) 3) Ran a query, selecting the node 'role of evidence in policymaking' and looking in 'selected items', opening up the dialogue box and selecting the sources box 4) selected the 'classified items' where 'interviewee category' equals ''policymaker', and click 'find now' 5) ...something goes wrong... nothing gets found, and 'ok' is still greyed out. Note that in stage 4, when it opens the dialogue box the tick on internals becomes unticked automatically (perhaps a source fo the problem?) Anyway, if someone can help me that would be very much appreciated. What am I doing wrong? Best, Roger
  20. Hi everyone, When putting demographic and company data in Excel for latter importation into NVIVO as attribute data, do you need to have only one entry per cell in an Excel spreadsheet? I am including some organizational data, e.g. on banks, with my demographic data, and some of the banks belong to more than one than one industry, e.g. consumer banking, corporate banking and investment banking. (See the sample Excel spreadsheet below). Can I include all three of these entries in one cell, or do I need to put the information in three separate cells. I would appreciate any other advice about how best to prepare an Excel data spreadsheet for importation into NVIVO as attribute data.
