  1. I have NVivo 11.4.0 installed on my Macbook Air and I am having trouble with cases and classifications. Every step has been followed to a. create cases, b. create a case classification, c. set attribute values, and d. assign cases to the classification created. Upon following this process, I am not able to see the cases (that represent interview respondents) in the case classification sheet. I am only able to see the attributes I created. Any thoughts as to what the problem could be?
  2. Hello, Newbie here, I searched the forums for answers but found nothing close... I hope my question is not outlandish or stupid. I'm working on a corpus of regulatory documents (performance contracts for government agencies) where each document (mostly PDFs) has dates, a government jurisdiction, belongs to a given agency (the cases), has been disclosed or not, etc. I imported a classification of the documents from an Excel spreadsheet, that gives me the relevant information on each contract. But the corresponding sources were already in the project, and so my new source classification points to empty documents, while the existing sources are not linked to the imported classification. Moreover, I am editing some of the sources (editing out foreign content), and since they are PDF the editing implies that I have to re-import the source. Cut-and-paste the content will not work. Is there a way to change the source each classification item "points" to, preserving its attributes, or do I have to re-encode all the attributes for existing or newly imported sources? Thanks, Jan

I run Nvivo 10.2.2 on a MacBook Pro Retina running OS X El Capitan (10.11.4) and I am experiencing issues with viewing demographic data that I have added as per classifications, attributes to my interview transcripts as case nodes. I have followed the instructions and created a Person classification with attributes like identifier, gender, age group, length of service, time with line manager. I have also managed to categorise all of my 70 interview transcripts as case nodes and Person, and have selected all the demographic info from the drop down menu. But once I save and close Nvivo I can no longer see my overview sheet with drop down menu to complete this.
  4. Hi all, I’m a beginner with NVivo, and over the past couple of weeks I’ve been working at coding a large amount of survey data. The dataset is large, as I’m working with 7,200 respondents, but I’ve divided responses according to question to make things a little simpler. I’ve been having experiencing some problems related to classification sheets and case nodes, and how they interact with the data. I’ve also been having a lot of trouble trying to run matrix coding and group coding queries according to population attributes. Here’s what I’ve done so far: I’ve imported a dataset containing responses to one of the questions, respondent IDs, as well as demographic information (within a single dataset). After that was done, I coded the responses. I noticed that NVivo automatically creates case nodes, classifications, and attributes based on the information you upload. I thought that since NVivo had already done this, I would be in the clear. I should also say that I’ve checked to make sure that cases are tied to attributes by opening the “case properties” info, and they look like they’re connected. Here’s the problem: I’ve tried to use matrix and group queries according to demographic attribute (e.g. how many people from “X” geographic area are represented in the “Baseball” node, for instance), but the queries always come up empty when I try to input anything specific to case nodes or attributes. I checked, and none of the case nodes contain references, so that’s probably why. At this point, I’m not sure if I’ve done something wrong in terms of coding, or in arranging case nodes/attributes. Just to be sure I started a new project, autocoded the answers, and manually uploaded case nodes from excel sheets, as well as classification sheets, and I had a similar problem. I assumed that when you code, NVivo would automatically tie your codes with the case node/attribute that are connected to them. Could anyone tell me where I could have gone wrong? I’d also really appreciate more information about case nodes/attributes/classification sheets and how to upload them so that all information is tied together properly. Thanks, RandomUser
  5. I am coding documents where each document is a case, and where there are many different activities that happened at specific times that need to be coded. Each activity is coded to the relevant node (there are usually multiple activities for each node for each case) and I would like to code the year that the activity occurred (there are usually multiple actives per year for each case). I have considered using attributes to do this. So year =(2000, 2001, ... 2015) as an attribute for EACH activity node. However I am concerned that this will not work because attributes seem to apply to all the data in a case. Are my concerns valid, and if so is there a way that I can achieve this objective? (I have a very large number of cases to code!) Many thanks for any help.
  6. I would like to attach a classification to a set of nodes. All the nodes are daughters to a super-ordinate node. It would be great if I could just attach the classification to the parent node and click a box to automatically apply it to the daughters, instead of having to do each one individually.
  7. I’ve got an issue in NVivo around classification sheets for sources vs. nodes for a systematic review. It’s papers basically that are imported as sources (rather than interviews but in effect they can be treated the same) that have then been coded via nodes that I’ve developed. I’ve got a source classification sheet with attributes that highlight key differences in the papers such as location. What I want to do is explore the coding based on the attributes of the papers e.g. china vs. UK. I can do this via a matrix query but it’s not working in the way that I want. I don’t have node classifications as the papers are sources rather than nodes – so I can’t explore via node attributes, if that makes sense? I played with the idea of creating case nodes, but it doesn’t feel right. Any suggestions as to what I could do to compare the coding in the papers without having to create case nodes?

Hello I've gone into my project and wanted to connect demographic data from my node classifications to participants' images, i.e. grouping or connecting all the images drawn by people 18-29, then 30-39 etc. However after going into my node classification sheet I see that all participants are now unassigned to any data! I saw an earlier post about this issue and tried re-doing the classifications and this did work all data was again properly assigned BUT it erases all the weeks of work assigning various attributes to ALL the existing nodes! I'm not sure what's happening here, I also noticed that when I click on "visualize" it shows 230 'unassigned' then shows the breakdown of participants into the pre-defined attributes, essentially counting the 230 twice, once unassigned and then again properly assigned to each attribute. I don't know how this happened or how to fix it. Please help ASAP. Cheers.
  9. I am working on a project that analyzes university program websites. My Internal Source folder structure is Internals/Websites/University. Each university's folder contains multiple webpages (home page, faq, courses, etc). Some of the universities offer multiple degrees that are part of my study. I originally coded the webpages with multiple nodes (nodes for degree requirements, college located in, department, type of masters, etc), but when trying to work with models and relationships, I couldn't filter the programs as I needed. It was recommended to me that I create classifications instead. I have an excel spreadsheet with my sources and the various attributes that I want to assign to each program. My spreadsheet has the first column as Institution, then each following column is an attribute (Type of Institution, College, Department, Type of Masters, Field Experience, Credit Requirement...). My problem is that some of the institutions offer multiple degrees, so under type of Masters there's actually 2 answers. Can I list the institution in Column 1 twice? How would that connect to my sources when I tried to import the spreadsheet? Is there a better way that I can do this? Thanks
  10. I have two node classifications, actor type (6 attribute values) and context (3 attribute values). I have a node for each respondent and all sources relating to that respondent is coded to that node. I notice though when I open the actor classification, and then open the context classification - when I go back to the actor classification it has not saved the attribute values. I have manually attributed the values and clicked save. But when I run a query I realise it not picking up the values and it appears not to have been saved. My hunch is I'm not connecting the nodes up properly to the classification sheets. I click right on the actor node, click classification and select the node classification. I then go into the classifications sheet and find sometimes the nodes are not coming through or there is a delay. Can anyone help with what I might be doing wrong?
