  1. Hi, I am a new user of NVivo 11. I am importing interview audio and time-stamped transcripts and finding that NVivo is not importing .MP3 audio correctly. The problem (example): I have an interview audio file of 1 hour 15 minutes, saved in .WAV format, with a file size of approximately 500MB. In order to reduce overcrowding on my desktop hard-drive, I compressed the file, converting it to .MP3 format. The new file is approximately 100MB, and still shows '1 hour 15 minutes' in the file>properties>audio panel. When I try importing the original .WAV file into NVivo, the wave-form appears correctly, and the audio track length is correct (at 1 hour 15 minutes). However, when I import the (matching) .MP3 file, the track appears as over 3 hours long - 1 hour 15 minutes of audio plus over 2 hours of silence. Why is this a problem? This means that when I import a time-stamped transcript, the audio and the transcript are no longer synced correctly. Request: Of course I can just go ahead and use the original .WAV files for all of my interviews - however this will quickly become infeasible due to the large file size. Any suggestions about what might be causing NVivo to interpret the .MP3 files incorrectly, or how to solve this issue? Thanks! Chris
  2. Hello, I can't import an MP3 file even if this format should be a recognized format (http://help-nv10mac.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/import_audio_or_video.htm). As stated on this link I tried to open it in Quicktime and exported it. As you can see from the attached screenshot, also this solution did not work for me. Did anyone have the same problem and found a solution?
  3. Hi Team, I have many references with both endnote bibliographic data and associated .pdfs. I have been trying to import both together through the Data/FromOtherSources/Endnote wizard, and I think I am following the instructions/set up correctly from here: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/exchange_data_between_nvivo_and_reference_management_tools.htm?rhsearch=endnote&rhsyns=%20#Understand_how_files_associated_with_references_are_handled and here: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/concepts/about_document_and_pdf_sources.htm. I have also checked the Endnote file location so these should be accessible but there's a possibility this is still not right. It is important to my research that the attributes from the bibliographic data are attached to the external reference as well as the pdf so I can see how the issues and arguments in the field have developed over time. Advice appreciated, I think/hope this is something simple I've missed as it looks like this is what the wizard is set up to do. Cheers, Elizabeth G P1 EN w Att Test.xml
  4. Hi Team, My second question for today is also about endnote - my bibliographic records are central to the design of my systematic literature review, which means that I need to set up each endnote reference as an individual case node in Nvivo and code/link other items about the same article to that case. This is partly because I need to export multiple versions of my data from Endnote to Nvivo to separate out the abstracts from other 'notes' and to identify individual authors etc. So my question is - where can I find the Endnote record number in Nvivo after import so that I can use it to create unique cases and code/auto-code to cases? I have checked the .txt/xls and .xml files that I can export from endnote and I can see that the record number is included in the export from endnote when the right filters are used for the export, but the record number seems to disappear in Nvivo post-import (see attached screenshot). Mysterious. Appreciate it if anyone can help me find these as I am sure I can make a work-around but it would be better to have a more reliable-repeatable process. Cheers, Elizabeth G
  5. Unable to generate waveform

Hello, I am in NVivo 11 for Mac, and I'm trying to import audio files, but am getting an "Unable to generate waveform" error (in two different error formats oddly). I have <20 .mp3 files that were all recorded on the same device. When it errors out, Nvivo Helper is open on my dock. My OSX version is El Capitan. Here is what I have tried so far: 1) When I first tried to import into the "Interviews" folder in the Internal Sources folder, I successfully imported a few files and got errors on others. Some of these errors read "Unable to generate waveform", while others read Error: Cannot import - unable to generate waveform". I tried again, and a few of the errors cleared. I could not get them all. 2) I tried importing from both my Dropbox folder and from my local drive. Same thing. 3) I realized it might be the file size and decreased it by lowering the bitrate. To make things easier, I stupidly deleted the successfully imported files and re-imported all of them. Now none of them will import. 4) I used a solution from the forum and opened each file in Quicktime and exported it as audio only. This converted the file into an AAC (.m4a) file, but it increased the size. So I then compressed it by decreasing the bitrate and created more lightweight .m4a files. These still would not import. 5) I tried re-installing NVivo. I tried starting a completely new project. I tried messing with the security preferences. Still getting the error. 6) I gave up on importing the files and tried linking the files as external sources. This I did successfully, except NVivo does not recognize them as audio files, so I can't transcribe in NVivo. Please tell me what to try next. I am out of ideas. Thank you!
  6. I have sources that have the name of a person, say Ahmed Hamza. I have an excel spreadsheet with lots of attribute data about each person, like Ahmed Hamza. I can import the excel spreadsheet as a node classification sheet. 1) When I do this, there is a way NVivo will recognize that each entry in one column, the names, should become nodes? The process here does not specify if the column with item 1,2,... become nodes in NVivo. 2) Assuming that #1 works and now I have a classification sheet where each row is a person coded as a node and also classified as person with his attributes, here is next question. Can I then tell Nvivo to find every instance of each name and code them all at the node of that name (which is classified as a person?) For example, Ahmed Hamza is imported via #1. Now I want to make sure that wherever in my sources "Ahmed Hamza" appears, those references fall under the node I just created. Thanks!
  7. Hi there, I am wanting to use NVivo to manage historical document data, much of which I have as jpg files. Also, it is possble to treat pdf documents as picture files, rather than text files? Is it possible to import and code jpg or other picture files in the latest version of Nvivo for Mac? I had thought this would be the case, but I can't see how to do it. Thank you! Rachel
  8. Spreadsheets

As far as I can tell, there is no capacity in NVIVO for Mac to import and code spreadsheets. This is a major limitation that I would like to see addressed. Much of the data I glean from other sources and the data I organize from my own research is in spreadsheet format, and I would like to be able to select cells, rows, columns, and other sections to code.
  9. Reference Manager Import

To Whom It May Concern, I think that Nvivo 10 could be exactly what I need to help me manage my lit reviews, but it will be exceedingly tedious to import my references from my manager (Zotero) one at a time manually. It would be such an improvement in the usability of the software for Mac to have the import feature that is available in the Windows version. I just thought I would point that out, since I haven't seen anyone else asking for that particular feature on the forum yet. I don't do much qualitative research (certainly none involving interviews and the like), but lit reviews are common across fields in academia, so I doubt I'm alone in wanting to use Nvivo for that purpose. Thanks for your time, Chris PS: I originally posted this in the wrong forum and have deleted the content of that post, replacing it with a message to this effect. Thanks, C
  10. Hi, I have found that when I import Chinese language PDFs into NVivo, all the Chinese characters are removed from imported document. I am also using English language PDFs in the same project and so need to accommodate both scripts. Any suggestions? Cheers, Julian
  11. Having watched this video that explains how to import datasets into Nvivo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWBUH-hCAEY), I still can't manage to import my chosen dataset. I have an excel spreadsheet containing a forecast for a product demand in different countries. So my column A is UK, Germany, France, and Denmark, and the headings for Column B, C, D, E, etc are 1990, 1991, 1992, etc until 2020. The content of the spreadsheet is just numbers. Now I want to create a relational database where the demand in Germany in 1993 will return that specific value from the spreadsheet. I imported my dataset, and nothing is created automatically, I have difficulties making the nodes, and somehow I made a classification instead of actually making a node. Some cells are white, some grey, I don't know which cells should be white and which ones should be grey. I don't know how to actually create my nodes automatically. Could you please help me with some steps I could follow, or tell me if what I am trying to achieve is actually doable in Nvivo? I would really appreciate your help. I might not have explained my issues very clearly, so do please tell me if I should explain myself better. Thank you ioana
  12. Hello all, i have 2 questions: 1) I have noticed that Nvivo lets me export data with paragraph numbers attached -- how can I display these paragraph numbers in Nvivo itself? 2) I want to import data with line numbers - i did not find any way of wrapping text & assigning line numbers in Nvivo. Also, if I import a document with line numbers from word, these line numbers are not imported. Will I have to import the data as a table with line numbers in the table then? is there a better way? Best, and many thanks, Christian
  13. I imported a classification sheet from an older project into a newer one. The excel file ended up in the external documents folder. Under the Classification tab, I do see the sheet. It's named Case. Next, I imported a source document, which is a transcription of an interview named Della. I autocoded Della for Cases, a node. All worked well; there are two cases, Audrey and Della, and each had 89 references. Problem: When I look at source document and try to see classification, the attributes are all unassigned. Shouldn't this map to Della's attributes? Thanks, Audrey
