  1. Hi All I'm quite new to Nvivo so apologies if this issue is answered elsewhere, my searches have so far proved fruitless. I am trying to create a matrix to compare the number of times two different types of themes are mentioned by my interview participants, in other words when 2 nodes appear in the same case. My case study is looking at an environmental policy intervention FYI. In my rows I have selected theme A - the impacts experienced, for example 'My business profits decreased' or 'Nothing changed for me' In my column I have theme B - evaluations of the project e.g. 'The project was a waste of money' or 'the project was good for the community' I want to know how many people think both 'My business profits decreased' AND 'The project was a waste of money'. I have already classified them into cases. When I run this query it only shows me when these two codes overlap in the same statement (exact same text), not when they appear in the same interview. If anyone could help me I would be forever grateful. Cheers.
  2. Hi all, I have revived an old thread in Nvivo9/10 forum about query timeout. I have gratefully received a response from QSR helpdesk about this topic and so am sharing this in case anyone else finds it useful: Firstly, please follow the steps below to perform a Compact and Repair of your project: 1. If your project is located on a network drive, copy it to your local machine. 2. If the project is currently open, close the project via File > Close. 3. Click the File tab > Help > Compact and Repair Project. 4. At the Select Project dialog box, locate and select the project - select NVivo Projects (*.nvp) to repair a standalone project. 5. Click Open. If the issue persists, you may need to change the SQL Time out period manually by editing your configuration file. This may be a little technical. You can ask your IT support personnel to help you with this if you are unable to do this yourself. The steps are below: o Ensure NVivo 11 is closed. o Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Wordpad o Click on File -> Open. Ensure "All Documents (*.*) is selected in the 'Files of Type' dropdown menu in the Open dialog box. 1. With NVivo 11 closed, open Windows Explorer a) Right-click on the Windows Start circle -> Explore. 2. Display all hidden files and folders: a) Click on Organize -> Folder and Search Options On the 'Folder Options' dialog, click on the View tab and check 'Show hidden files and folders' option c) Click on the Apply button and click OK. 2. Navigate to the following folders: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\QSR_International1 o You should see few folders that start with NVivo.exe..... Go into the first folder and see if it has subfolder named "11.1.0.411"2. If not, go back one level and go into the second NVivo.exe.. folder to see if it has a 11.1.0.4112 subfolder One of the two folders will definitely have a subfolder named "11.1.0.411"2. Go into this subfolder (11.1.0.411)2. You should see a file called user.config, double click on it to open it.(Open it with Notepad) o The 19th3 line from top in this file (or one or two lines above or below) should have something that says SqlCommandTimeout setting. The next line should have a value of 60. Change this value to a higher number like 120 or 180. o Open NVivo 11 and re-run your query. If you still get the same error. Try increasing the timeout value to a higher number. Please note changing the sqltimeout value may result in the Cancel button (when you run a query) to become unresponsive. Lastly, if you are using 32-bit NVivo 11, it will also help to switch to 64-bit version. Please refer to the link below to find whether you can install 64-bit, http://www.qsrinternational.com/support_faqs_detail.aspx?view=1189 1. Rather than going through all those steps, I found it easier to type %appdata% into my Windows Explorer and choose the right version of Nvivo from there. 2. Just to point out that this number is the version of Nvivo you're running. Your version may be different, so check this first. You can do that by going to 'File', 'Help', 'About Nvivo'. 3. It was not the 19th line for me. I just used CTRL+F to find the SqlCommandTimeout setting.
  3. I am currently running matrix queries and would like to be able to save the results in a format that is easy to share with my team (many of whom do not have NVivo). Additionally, I'd like the saved results to have the coding stripes so it's easy for my teammates to see the overlap/intersection of the codes of interest. Is this possible?
  4. Matrix query function

Hi, I am novice user. I am student and just bought Nvivo 11 license for student. I would like to know whether the student's license has matrix query function or not because I can't find one in my Nvivo application. Thank you
  5. Hi, I have free answers to 8 questions from 35 participants. I have added and coded each question as a source with the participant number next to each answer in every spreadsheet. What I want to do now is to export the nodes for each participant to spss. When I try to run the matrix code I get the matrix coded for all the participant in each source, but what I need to do is to compare participants between the questions, if that makes sense. Essentially a quantification of the stripes that appear in NVIVO in an SPSS or Exel format. Is this possible? Thank you in advance
  6. Hi, I have imported an excel data base which includes quantitative and qualitative data from over 200 respondents (which each row in the excel file indicating one respondent). I imported the data using the wizard and assigned quantitative fields as classifying fields and qualitative as codable text etc I then created a node for each respondent and assigned attribute values (as node classifications) Everything in my classification table looks fine but everytime I run a matrix coding query (or any other query for that matter) and try to use the classification nodes as parameters for the query it tells me that my search is empty ( when there is certainly data) Furthermore I would really like to be able to use classifaction nodes to find out how specific groups were coded. Specifically we asked four questions which had open ended responses, these were all coded (from the same source) and now I would like to know which nodes were coded for each question so I can compare them at that very broad level. I would like to do the same with gender (another classifying code) and see how each gender was coded. I know I can explore how each gender responded for specific nodes (in a matrix query) but I want more basic information than that for an initial analysis. I had seen some guides about doing this but required my classificatino nodes to be working, which they are not. any suggestions? thanks Amy
  7. Hi. I have run matrix query by selecting a a few attributes for my rows (e.g. company industry sectors like materials, financial services, etc.), and some nodes form my columns (i.e. different types of events that have impacted those companies, e.g. earthquakes, hurricanes, etc.) The query gives me a nice table showing the number of coding references for each industry sector (materials, financial services, etc.) and the corrresponding type of events impacting that sector (e.g. earthquakes, hurricanes). My question: Is it is possible to have NVIVO list the results of the matrix query, i.e. the coding references, as a weighted distriubtion? Since my dataset is more heavily weighted towards one industry sector (e.g. financial services has 8 companies), than the other (e.g. materials only has 4 companies) is it possible to weight the results of the matrix query (i.e. the number of coding references) to eliminate the bias in my sample created by having more companies from one industry sector than another? I know it is possible for NVIVO to offer a weighted distrubtion by showing the cell content of the matrix query in row and column percentages, but can one show a weighted distribution using "coding references" as the cell content? Or do I need to export the matrix query to Excel, and do this calculation manually?
