  1. Hi! New to NVivo, here. I have done some initial coding and have about 10 nodes. Now I want to code those nodes into fewer, broader categories. What is the best way to do that? Thank you in advance! -Yaz
  2. Mind Map Creation

I was in an overview session recently and one of the participants asked if we could create a mindmap from nodes in the same way we can create nodes from a mindmap. Another individual indicated they were good at generating a node structure but not so good at visualising it so this would be a great tool.
  3. I am trying to code my data to themes so I can see which themes are raised and how often. That is the easy part. However I need to be able to see which of these theme nodes that I have coded to are brought up by various specific denominations of my sources. I have similar and different themes being brought up by various different denominations of my data so thus far I have coded my data to one node per theme, opposed to coding it to one node per theme per denomination of data. To divide up my data into the different denominations I have coded all of my data to at least three nodes (rural or urban, after or before, and job title). So I can use a simple coding query to see all each of the different denominations of my data (for example all data that is rural, before, and management). But my issue is how can I bring up a node hierarchy that shows me all the different themes brought up by this specific denomination of my data. I need to be able to see a unique node hierarchy like this for all of my different denominations of my data. There will be over forty different themes brought up in my data so I would like a much more efficient and clear way of doing this than using a node matrix (because there are lots of empty cells in it). Using groups to do this may be useful but I cannot find a way of only allowing certain nodes to show up in a group. I am at the early stages of my project so if I need to be using a different approach to coding it is not too late for me to be using cases instead of certain nodes or something like that.
  4. Hello, I would like to some advice on counting the number of references that are coded at a particular node. I know that I can just click on the node and a count will appear for that node, but is there a way to account for cross-coded references? In other words, I would like to know how many references from my source have been coded overall, which I am having difficulty calculating because many references are coded to more than one node, so if I just count up all of the references that are coded at each node, I will inevitably end up double- or triple-counting some references. If my question is unclear, please let me know, and I'd be happy to try clarifying. Thank you so much for your help. Elisabeth
  5. Hi, My data involves multiple sources for one person and so I have grouped the sources into cases. I'm hoping to tabulate or chart the percentage of coverage of a select number of different nodes in each of these cases (at present I can only seem to get these percentages for the individual source documents). Many thanks in advance.
  6. Hello everyone! My organization recently purchased Nvivo 11 for qualitatively analyzing our open ended survey responses. I am using the text search query function to create nodes based on pre-established themes for our data. I input the data from an excel spreadsheet that has the following items: respondent id, gender, class year, open ended comment. I have been able to create the nodes based on our themes and export the findings in excel as: id, comment. What I would like to do is export the node with the case classifications as well, similar to how it was imported. My goal is to have a spreadsheet with: id, gender, class year, comment. I'm trying to get this for each node created so that essentially I've whittled down the large number of comments to only those fitting in with the themes we have identified which I will then separate by the other factors (gender and class year). I've used the export function in the data tab, but didn't find it provided anything useful regarding what I'm looking for. What I found more useful was right clicking on the node and using the "export node" option, but as I mentioned it does not indicate the case classifications in the output. If anyone could either provide directions on how to export with both the node comments and the classifications or indicate where to find that information it would be very helpful! Thanks!
  7. Coding "upstream"

Hello, If I have a hierarchy of nodes like so (silly example); 1. Dessert 1.1 Trifle 1.1.1 Sherry trifle 1.2 Ice cream 1.2.1 chocolate ice cream And I code something as being "chocolate ice cream", will it also be coded as "Ice cream" and "Dessert" ? Is this what "aggregate coding from child nodes" does ion node properties. Why is this turned off by default? Thanks in advance, Brian
  8. Node Search Function

Dear QSR team, I made the below request about a year ago, but it appears you have not had a chance to implement it, so I thought I'd restate my interest in this new (straightforward) feature: Could you please add a 'node search function' to the toolbar. You already provide this feature, but I have to use a work-around to get there. At the moment, in order to search my nodes I have to use the 'query' tab and then click on 'selected items' and then select 'nodes' to get the option to search all nodes. This is rather time consuming and could probably be fixed quite easily with a 'nodes search button' at the top level. I appreciate that for some users this feature will be less essential, but my research projects are rather large (longitudinal), requiring me to develop several hundred distinct nodes/sub-nodes, which makes it hard to remember them all (and which can lead to unnecessary duplication of nodes). Please find attached screenshots of the work-around I currently using to get there. Thanks and all the best, Tobi
  9. Hello Is there a way of setting the default so that Coverage and References are suppressed when I view a node? I wanted to reduce the amount of text I was copying out for each node. I am having to click these off for each node as I enter them which is a bit of a pain. I wondered if I could just set a default somewhere so that I didnt have to keep manually turning them off. thanks for any ideas Jane
  10. I’m working with a fairly large dataset (300+ respondents for a mixed open- and close-ended response survey). I did some preliminary analysis of themes for the open-ended questions using Excel, just to get things moving. I want to know if there is any way in NVivo to create theme nodes based on what I created in Excel—the alternative seems to be that I need to do ALL of my coding from the start in NVivo, which seems like it will take forever with so many observations. Here are some screen shots of my question; hopefully it makes more sense this way. I did the following in Excel. You can see the open-ended questions in column C, and columns D-F have the themes I created. I imported my dataset into NVivo, and now I want to know if there is any way I can automatically (or very quickly) create nodes based on the themes I found, and then code the open-ended responses with those nodes. It seems like the only way to do this is to literally go through each open-ended response, highlight it, and then code at a new/existing node. This is VERY cumbersome, as I have over 300 responses per question. Is there any way to do this more quickly?
  11. Hello, I am working with long PDF documents to conduct a textual analysis and I want to make specific references. It would be really helpful if the 'reference' page of each 'node' displayed the page numbers of each bit of coded text and not only the percentage of the text it covers and the number of the reference. Cheers, Youri
  12. I have just discovered that my Node Classification Sheet for Participants does not include rows for five of my interview participants. In the Properties box for each of the Nodes that is missing from the sheet, the classifications option indicates that it is assigned to that classification and the Attributes Value tab shows that values have been assigned for each attribute in the classification. I have looked around for a way to update the Node Classification Sheet, but cannot find one. I did try the "Show All Rows" button even though there was no indication that rows were hidden. That made no difference. If I export and import, I will have the same information that I have now. We use NVivo 10. These are the last five interviews imported into the project. Any idea how to get these nodes and their attribute values enterred into the classification sheet without having to do it outside of NVivo and importing a new sheet? 13. Large project in progress. Many transcribed interviews and currently 2000 nodes! Applied all the optimisation tricks. Upgraded to Windows 10. Increased RAM to 12GB. Occurs on different computer. Basically when I copy and merge nodes (as part of sorting), randomly NVivo10 will stop responding. Sometimes this is with just a couple of small nodes being merged. When NVivo fails/crashes/lags for me, CPU and Memory usage still seem low. Recent error code also included. Anyone else encountered this? 14. I would like for it to be easier to see whether nodes are aggregated or not. Couldn't the actual symbol to the left of the node name provide some indication, rather than having to search in the list view for a column where it is indicated? I usually view nodes with the detail panel on the right, which means I do not see the full list view, and usually don't see the symbol. Would love it if a node that was aggregated would be indicated with to the left of the node name, while those that are not aggregated would simply carry the usual round blue symbol.
  15. Dear all I'm under a deadline, so I hope you could help me out quickly with this question. I'm a newby at Nvivo10, I've looked already into the guidelines but it's very confusing with all the posibilities and boxes you have to check. I've coded all my sources (texts) into nodes and childnodes. The result is a 'nodetree' with main nodes and childnodes etc. Now I want to export the hierarchy of two nodes, with the coded text under it, organised by the hierarchy. To visualise here's what I would like to have: "MAIN NODE" - subnode - subnode * subnode [coded text coded text coded text....] - subnode * subnode [coded text coded text coded text....] - subnode - subnode * subnode [coded text coded text coded text....] - subnode * subnode [coded text coded text coded text....] I don't know if it's possible (looking through the guidelines, I think it is, but I can't seem to find out how...), if yes: it would save me a lot of time! Thank you for any helpful input! Kind regards, Ellen.
  16. HI I have converted .nvp file to .nvpx In the MAC file, all text in nodes has disappeared - text IS in the sources. The list view and the coding stripes also show that there is no coding. I converted with the convertor - the file size was about 34.7MB. Can you please advise? thanks, Jennifer
  17. A particularly frustrating interface issue is the highlighting of text within scanned PDFs. Although it is possible to highlight accurately in the PDF file itself and even within the PDF in EndNote, when the files are brought into Nvivo, you cannot highlight specific areas of text without the highlight area jumping lines or missing chunks of text. The example attachment explains my issue. I was trying to highlight the whole of the text portion but this was the result. I feel this is an important bug to resolve for Mac as it prevents more widespread use within bibliographic research which I know QSR are keen to promote. Does anyone have a work around?
  18. You are currently providing the following nodes feature to uncode data: Analyze -> Uncode Selection At -> Existing Nodes / Recent Nodes It would be fantastic if you could add an option to uncode: 'Currently Coded Nodes' I do not think this feature would be hard for you to add, as you are already providing the function - although in a way that is hard to reach for the user, as explained below. If I select the 'Existing Nodes' option and click on the 'With Coding' tab, Nivivo provides a list of all available codes and highlights those (in a white rather than a grey background color) that are already been used for this selection. However, I use over 200 nodes in my research and it is rather time-consuming to scroll through the entire list every time I want to check which nodes have already been used for a specific selection of words. Thus, it would be fantastic if you could either add a new tab within the 'Existing Nodes' option (that lists only those nodes that are currently used to code the selection) or add an additional list, similar to the 'Recent Nodes'. Thanks and best, Tobias
  19. I want to create a report pretty similar to the 'Coding Summary By Node Report' (inbuilt in Nvivo10) but I want to be able to see the 'child node' coding. I have a theme (parent node) and about 5-6 child nodes under it. I want it all in one report (i.e. I don't want a separate report for each child node) - but I do want to be able to see at a glance which child node I coded the different bits of text at. How to do this as a customised report? Thanks!
  20. I am attempting to code an audio file. I'm able to select particular segments and code them as selections (rather than assigning codes to the entire source), but I don't seem to be able to go back and re-select those segments for coding again. When I'm working with the audio file, segments I've already selected show up as light blue bars above the player, and the codes I've already assigned to them show up in the coding stripes tab in the correct place. However, once I've gone back to listening to the file as a whole (which also seems to be difficult to do - it keeps replaying the selected section unless I drag the slider to somewhere else in the file, rather than continuing with whatever is after the selected section), I can't seem to go back and work with the segments I selected previously again. I can click on the bars, and they then show up as dark turquoise. However, when I right-click on them or try to use the Analyze tab to "code selection," this is grayed out and I can't edit the coding of the selection or assign further codes. Anyone else having this problem, or figured out what to do about it? I've attached two pictures in case this helps - the first one is of the segments as light blue bars, and the second shows one of the segments after I've clicked on it and (I think) selected it, but can't seem to work with it again. Sorry if this is a confusing description. Thanks in advance!
  21. I have a very long document of data and I'm trying to determine how two of us can determine where the other has stopped coding the data? I keep looking for a symbol that shows in the Source that a area has been coded in the dataset and what node it was coded to. I know that I can use the coding stripes to see the data represented on the side. Yet that doesn't actually correlate back to the data to show me what needs to be done. We realized that we were both doing the same things again and we need to make sure that doesn't happen again. I realize that we could report back and forth on where we start and stop but I can't imagine with the sophistication of the product that it doesn't display what has been coded. Feeling lost, Julie
  22. Hello, I just started using NVivo for Mac and am trying to teach it to myself. I have a couple questions regarding coding using nodes. I am coding interviews and have developed nodes to represent thematic codes and subcodes. I'd like to be able to analyze my data to assess for differences across various factors, including race, gender, etc. I developed a person classification to do this. I'd also like to analyze my data to assess for differences in participant responses across other factors such as experiences of discrimination. For example, I'd like to look at the differences in participant responses to certain questions among individuals who have experienced various forms of discrimination. If I add "experiences of discrimination" as a node classification however, I can only assign one classification to each case node. But some of my participants will have more than one kind of discrimination experience. Is it possible to create node classifications that allow us to assign more than one classification to a particular case node? If not, is it better to just create regular coding nodes for "experiences of discrimination" rather than trying to use node classifications? And if this is the case, how would I go about analyzing my data to see these differences--just use a query? I hope these questions are clear--if not please let me know! And thanks in advance for any guidance I can get!
  23. How do you change or edit the name of a node you have already created and used?
  24. Hello I've gone into my project and wanted to connect demographic data from my node classifications to participants' images, i.e. grouping or connecting all the images drawn by people 18-29, then 30-39 etc. However after going into my node classification sheet I see that all participants are now unassigned to any data! I saw an earlier post about this issue and tried re-doing the classifications and this did work all data was again properly assigned BUT it erases all the weeks of work assigning various attributes to ALL the existing nodes! I'm not sure what's happening here, I also noticed that when I click on "visualize" it shows 230 'unassigned' then shows the breakdown of participants into the pre-defined attributes, essentially counting the 230 twice, once unassigned and then again properly assigned to each attribute. I don't know how this happened or how to fix it. Please help ASAP. Cheers.
  25. Hi, As a beginner I run into some things that are not (like much of NVivo - Chapeau!) entirely intuitive. I have imported a spreadsheet from survey monkey and auto coded all the rows and columns (respondents versus questions). In addition I have created an expanding bunch of nodes that deal with the content of my survey. Some of the questions represent two opposing poles of a statement. Through the use of a matrix coding query I can fairly simply combine all of the coding that relates to the intersection of one particular aspect (as defined by a 'content/topic' node) and a set of say three questions (also defined as nodes). I am interested in examining the word usage of one pole as against the opposite. How do I create from the matrix (one row with three columns) a single new entity that I can subject to a word frequency analysis? I have tried a number of 'intuitive' ways, but can't get it done, yet I feel there must be a simple way (that is probably why I don't see it!) Thanks for looking at this! Kindest regards, Robert
