  1. Hi Thanks in advance for any help provided I feel pretty lost in this endevour as NVivo has many, many options and I'm not sure which one I need to take. I have manually produced codes for each of 9 focus group sessions, which I've laid out in 9 separate excel spreadsheets. There were between 6 and 8 of the same people in each focus group. As the example below shows, each spreadsheet is therefore made up of many rows, with each row containing a name, an illustration in the next cell, with the next cell containing the code and then the next one contains a memo/note re' this illustration and the code. So, four items in a row that I need to be able to analyze and which I've now imported. I have created 8 participants (cases) in a new NVivo project and have also imported all 9 spreadsheets with some of the columns being classifying and others being codeable. I have a few questions: 1) I want to be able to code (create nodes) within each of the 9 internal documents so that I can see how the nodes change over the weeks that I conducted the focus groups. (I have done this manually with cardboard so can see there's a 'trend' over the time period and want to be able to see this electronically.) 2) I want to be able to assign a node to one of the cases (person) so that the node is 'linked' to the person who made the comment. Then I can see how the nodes changed over time and how they changed per participant. 3) I noticed that because I haven't linked a node to a case the system is assigning the same node to the same 'source' when this is not the case. If I can assign a node to a case then I won't have this problem I have thought that maybe I can make a new node folder for each of the sessions nodes - so, 9 node folders with codes from each session inside the relevant folder - what do you think of that idea? But it doesn't solve the linking of nodes to cases ..... Thank you very much in advance for your help! Delia
  2. I’m working with a fairly large dataset (300+ respondents for a mixed open- and close-ended response survey). I did some preliminary analysis of themes for the open-ended questions using Excel, just to get things moving. I want to know if there is any way in NVivo to create theme nodes based on what I created in Excel—the alternative seems to be that I need to do ALL of my coding from the start in NVivo, which seems like it will take forever with so many observations. Here are some screen shots of my question; hopefully it makes more sense this way. I did the following in Excel. You can see the open-ended questions in column C, and columns D-F have the themes I created. I imported my dataset into NVivo, and now I want to know if there is any way I can automatically (or very quickly) create nodes based on the themes I found, and then code the open-ended responses with those nodes. It seems like the only way to do this is to literally go through each open-ended response, highlight it, and then code at a new/existing node. This is VERY cumbersome, as I have over 300 responses per question. Is there any way to do this more quickly?
  3. Hi, I'm having trouble working out the most efficient way to set up coding for 60 interview transcripts. I have two participant groups who completed separate interviews, however sometimes they spoke in each other's interviews as well, which I will include in my coding. So I don't think I can analyse accurately through the use of an attribute query. I am analyzing interviews where these participants discussed why they were satisfied or dissatisfied with three different services they received. The sources of satisfaction and dissatisfaction will be my themes. From what I can see, it seems the three services will have different themes but there will also be some themes that are consistent across the three services. I want to see the results overall as well as by participant group and by services individually. I would like to analyse the themes under a) satisfaction and dissatisfaction for the following combinations: 1. participant group 1, covering service 1 2. participant group 1, covering service 2 3. participant group 1, covering service 3 4. participant group 1, covering all three services combined 5. participant group 2, covering service 1 6. participant group 2, covering service 2 7. participant group 2, covering service 3 8. participant group 2, covering all three services combined 9. both participant groups covering service 1 10. both participant groups covering service 2 11. both participant groups covering service 3 12. both participant groups combined, covering all three services combined What is the best way to code themes of satisfaction and dissatisfaction so I can discuss the results according similarities and differences between the participant groups and services? Thank you for your help!
