  1. Hi, I have interview files that are audio + transcript in NVivo. I'd like to be able to do the following word counts for each one: 1. The total number of words spoken by the participant (NOT the researcher - so not the total number of words in the transcript) 2. The total number of words coded Is it possible to do this in NVivo? Thank you!
  2. When coding transcripts that are attached to audio files (some imported and some created in NVivo), the script in the window jumps around, making it very difficult to move smoothly through the transcript. For example, I'll highlight a sentence and when I release the mouse, the view will jump to a previous point in the transcript. I have to scroll down to see the sentence that I've just highlighted. Then I can right-click and code the sentence, but when I click in the transcript box after coding, the view jumps to another point in the interview and I have to scroll down to continue to code the interview from where I left off. This adds lots of time to coding and means that it is very easy to skip over portions of the interview with all of the jumping around. This might be connected to the issue that another user was having in which the transcript window doesn't scroll down as you type, meaning that you can type, adding text to the box, but the window doesn't scroll down. I think it might be jumping back to the top of the entire interview for some actions and to the top of the timed box (with a start time and end time) for others.
  3. I've transcribed interview data in NVivo and have coded each of the interviews (by right clicking on the source) at case nodes (2 interviews per case). I want to be able to do my coding by looking at all the data for each case, so I run a quick query for a case (by double-clicking on the case node). When the results come up, they are totally out of order, and because they don't show the time stamps themselves, I can't tell which thoughts come immediately after others, which makes it hard to read through and make sense of. See attached screenshot as example. Reference 2 is literally the last entry in the transcript and Reference 3 is the second to last.. but it's not in completely reverse order, because if I go to the end of the results for this source, it's just a random transcript entry. Can you help me figure out how to get query results that show transcript entries in the correct time order?
  4. Hi, I want to import transcripts with timestamps into NVivo. The timestamps have the format hh:mm:ss.t where t stands for tenth of a second. In other words, the timestamp format corresponds exactly to the format into which NVivo converts various other formats as shown here in the NVivo manual. It appears that NVivo recognizes the ".t" part of the timestamps when creating the timespan for each row, but then also interprets the t-part of the code as part of the transcribed text so that it also appears in the transcript column, like this: 0:01.6 - 0:03.2 6 I: Yes, hi how are you doing? 0:03.2 - 0:05.6 2 R: I'm okay, how are ... Where the black part is in the timespan column and the red part is in the content column. (See also attached image) To be clear: the issue that I am reporting here is that the 6 and 2 in red (i.e. in the content column should not be there. Hope this can be fixed soon. Christoph
  5. Hi, I have coded numerous documents (PDFs and Word) and have had great success with coding stripes. I'm currently coding transcripts, and when I select "show nodes recently coding," nothing happens. Usually the coding stripes will show up alongside the item I'm coding, but in transcripts, this does not work. The current transcript was created in Nvivo (not imported), but even imported transcripts don't show coding stripes either. I can see that items have been coded based on the numbers indicated in the "sources" and "references" columns in Nodes. I can't find anything about coding stripes not showing up beside transcripts in the help guide, so I hope someone here will have a solution. Thanks!
  6. I am an Nvivo newbie, who has just coded all of my interviews (with way too many nodes 450!! which I am now sorting through, organizing hiearchally, finding synonyms, etc) However once I have coded my sources, I can't really see what I have coded where from within the source itself. My coded sections are highlighted, but I don't know how to see which nodes I've coded. I don't find the coding stripes at all helpful, I just want to see a list of the codes I have used on a selection. I've tried exporting to word (I can get my source classifications shown but not the nodes) and printing to PDF (it's one hot confusing mess). Do you have any tips to help me see how I have coded my transcripts within Nvivo and how to export the coded transcripts with codes to Word. Thanks in advance. Melissa PS. I don't have any problem generating a report showing me which nodes I have used and where I have used them for an interview - these are presented alphabetically by node. What I would like is to see the nodes in a 3rd column beside my transcript sections - column 1 timestamp, column2 text, column 3 nodes.
